Prohibido is a single-weight display serif typeface designed for and inspired by the album Musas, by Mexican singer-songwriter Natalia Lafourcade. Just as Natalia references ideas of resurrection in cultural tradition, never-ending love, and the inherent power and delicate nature of femininity, so do the letter-forms in Prohibido. It’s designed with high contrast between thick to thin strokes, exaggerated character width, and hairline strokes that are broken at the contrast axis.
Prohibido’s letter-forms illustrate a story of the precarious balance between strength and vulnerability; between tradition and what is to come. Following the same vein, the type specimen booklet is presented as a collection of vignettes and collage studies that highlight the uses of the typeface while expanding its visual narrative using lyrics from the album.
